When we think of sake, most of us imagine a drink with around 15% alcohol—something to sip slowly over a leisurely meal. But there is another side to Japan’s national beverage that deserves far more attention, especially during the Indian summer: session sake.

Borrowed from the beer world, the term “session” refers to beverages that are lower in alcohol and easy to enjoy over an extended period without overwhelming the palate. In sake, this usually means styles ranging from around 5% to 12% ABV, although freshness, crispness and drinkability matter just as much as alcohol content.
These are sakes designed less to impress with power and more to delight with elegance.
More Than Just Low Alcohol
Session sake isn’t a formal category in Japan. Rather, it is a style of drinking that celebrates lightness and refreshment. Alongside naturally low-alcohol sakes, many sparkling sakes, delicate Ginjo styles and some fresh Nama expressions also fit comfortably into this space.
Served well chilled, they offer lively fruit aromas, gentle sweetness, bright acidity and a clean finish that make them particularly appealing when temperatures soar. While Japan has long embraced seasonal sake drinking, the rest of the world is discovering these lighter styles at just the right time. As consumers become increasingly health-conscious and the global trend towards low- and no-alcohol beverages gathers momentum, many drinkers are seeking options that offer flavour and sophistication without excessive alcohol. Session sake fits that brief beautifully.
For Indian consumers exploring premium lifestyle beverages, these lighter expressions offer an exciting alternative to beer, wine and cocktails while introducing an entirely different drinking experience rooted in centuries of Japanese brewing tradition.
Session Sakes You Can Find in India
India’s sake portfolio is still evolving, but several excellent session sakes have already found their way to our shores.
Hakutsuru Awayuki Sparkling Sake (5% ABV) is perhaps the easiest introduction to the category. Lightly sparkling with gentle sweetness and soft bubbles, it is bright, refreshing and wonderfully approachable.

Kizakura Piano Sparkling Sake (5% ABV) is another delightful example. Naturally carbonated, it displays elegant, persistent bubbles with aromas of apple and pear complemented by a delicate rice sweetness, making it an effortless summer drink.
One of the more intriguing modern expressions is Princess Marriage – IKU’S SHIRO (9% ABV). Brewed using Yamadanishiki rice polished to an impressive 48%, it surprises many first-time drinkers with its vibrant acidity, often inviting comparisons with a crisp white wine. Aromas of green apple, orange, tropical citrus and fresh mint combine with beautifully balanced rice sweetness to create a remarkably refreshing sake that is equally enjoyable on its own.

Hana Kizakura Junmai Ginjo (11.5% ABV) showcases how lower alcohol need not compromise complexity. Brewed using Kizakura’s proprietary yeast isolated from yellow cherry blossoms and the famed underground spring water of Kyoto’s Fushimi district, it offers expressive Ginjo aromas layered with delicate floral notes and a light, off-dry palate that keeps you coming back for another sip.

Hakutsuru Sayuri Nigori (12.5% ABV) sits at the upper end of the session spectrum. Its cloudy appearance, creamy texture and delicate notes of white grape, cherry blossom and strawberry create a soft, rounded drinking experience that remains elegant rather than heavy.

Together, these labels illustrate that session sake isn’t a single style. Sparkling, floral, fruity or gently creamy, they all share one defining characteristic—remarkable drinkability.

The Session Sakes We’d Love to See in India
Although India’s sake selection has grown significantly over the past few years, there is still enormous scope for introducing lighter, contemporary styles. Through trade fairs, tastings and educational events, Sake Club India has had the opportunity to showcase several outstanding session sakes that deserve a place on Indian shelves.

One that consistently wins admirers is Kamikokoro Kokageno Sakana (8% ABV) from Okayama Prefecture. Brewed from locally grown rice polished to 70%, it uses an unusual yeast isolated from the skins of Okayama’s celebrated white peaches. The result is a fresh, fruit-forward Junmai sake with lively acidity and exceptional drinkability. Already a major success in overseas markets, it has proved equally popular whenever Sake Club India has showcased it in India.
Another standout is Hana Hou Hou Shu from Marumoto Sake Brewery in Okayama. At just 5% ABV, this bottle-fermented sparkling sake is available in both white and rosé styles, offering creamy bubbles with bright berry and citrus notes. It was an instant crowd favourite when we presented it during Vinexpo New Delhi.

We would also love to see Hana Awaka from Ozeki Brewery in Hyogo. At around 7% alcohol, its beautifully refreshing range—including floral, peach and yuzu expressions—captures the playful personality that modern sparkling sake has come to represent.

A Style Whose Time Has Come
As sake culture continues to evolve in India, the conversation is gradually moving beyond premium Daiginjos and traditional food pairings. Consumers are increasingly looking for beverages that are lighter, more refreshing and suited to relaxed, informal occasions.
Session sake represents exactly that shift.
Whether sparkling, delicately aromatic or naturally lower in alcohol, these bottles show that sake doesn’t always have to be reserved for formal dinners or special celebrations. Sometimes, the greatest pleasure comes from pouring a well-chilled glass on a warm afternoon and simply appreciating its freshness.
As more Japanese breweries and Indian importers recognise this opportunity, these elegant, easy-drinking styles may well become the next chapter in India’s growing love affair with sake.
